Mac OS X Version 10.4.11 - Disk Utilities Hanging Performance Issues Hanging/Performance Issues Hello everyone, I am having this challenge with Disk Utility Version 10.5.6 (198.12) while I was formatting a 2T Seagate Drive (S.M.A.R.T. Status: Not Supported); using the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Settings. The Driver came original with all that Windows stuff installed on it and I want to clean that up the having an only Mac Configuration. As I started the 0000 in process, one pass, I perceived how slow and sluguish the driver got into. Looking further on the bottom it was saying that the process was going to take something like 336 hours to complete.
Yes, I do mind waint for 14 days to complete this task. So I am sharing this here because the Mac OS X Version 10.4.11 PPC is no longer supported by the DBR section (Developer Bug Report). Some of us know how tedious must be to rang around digging into obsolete things as the PPC OS. Anyway, here are the steps I took to get out of the hanging process. If someone out there have any ideas how to do better, any command line tips will be well taken, if willing, please give your word on this bug subject.
Steps to patch the issue: ( Note that I said 'patch' not resolved ) 1. Open up Activity Monitor and killed the process so I could get out of the hanging issue. Selected the Seagate Driver and hitted (command I); to get more information and changed the permissions of the driver from: Owner: Read, Write Group: Wheel; Read, Write Everybody: No Access Obs: The reason I am not giving anybody any access to read is because everybody do not have any business on reading backup data unless you're the Admin for that System. So, I deleted what was already there. Mainly uncomplete back up data from a previous and unfinished backup that had stopped because of a bug that make the whole Mac OS freeze when was approaching the final stage. Now I am starting to back a data from a driver that is calling the quits through a bug.
Looking at the logs I spot this in a title called 'panic log:' under DirectoryService. П™‚ (S.M.A.R.T. Status: Not Supported) Normal for External drives, especially USB & Firewire. Selected the Seagate Driver Did you actually install some Seagate Driver??? The reason I am not giving anybody any access to read is because everybody do not have any business on reading backup data unless you're the Admin for that System.
Forget that for the moment. What exact Mac do you have, & is this drive USB or Firewire? At the Apple Icon at top leftAbout this Mac, click on the text below Mac OS X where it says Version 10.4.x and report the Build# please. Then click on More InfoHardware and report this upto but not including the Serial#. Hello BDAqua, Thanks for the follow up; BDAqua -Did you actually install some Seagate Driver??? Yes the Driver is an USB. It came with the windows format in and a disk with a Mac version to backup that is not that great. So I did re-formated the driver for Mac with Disk Utility that took hours to do then I initiate a drag and drop back but it proove to be a very slow process. So I am researching different avenues of action. I download the Carbon Copy Cloner from; and I going to backup the old driver that is calling the quits with CCC.

No because it did not work well for the Mac, I am using carbon copy cloner by: Eduardo B1 Obs: This issue does not have much to do with the Seagate Driver itself that is new but with the Mac Disk Utility's behavior and the other driver where I am preparing to backup the data. This other driver acquired a bug somehow and when you try to backup the data it sends a call to the computer that froze the machine last time I tried. Right now, I am researching for a terminal command to cleanup and reformat the New Seagate Driver and initiate the new backup. Disk Utility gave me a outrageous time of 14 days to clean up the Seagate driver. I am pretty sure This Disk Utility is gone somewhat crazy.
Thanks for the followup! Eduardo Message was edited by: Eduardo B1. I actually said it was usb driver; BDAqua -Did you actually install some Seagate Driver??? Yes the Driver is an USB.
BDAqua - Your Mac only has USB1.1 which would be panfully slow. Yes, that is probably one of the reasons for the sluggishness. Too bad I forget to see this detail. This machine does have a Firewire port that is faster than the original USB 1.1 but the USB cable is proprietary design of Seagate, not standard in both ends and I thnk they do not have a way to accept firewire. However the issue of the bug in the LaCie Driver have me scratching my head because usually, the Mac do not catch too many stuff. Usually, some of the problems occouring on the Mac are part of bad configuration.
That is a good deal indeed and I am ordering this one. Now I am still stack with the freezing bug from the previous driver. Last night I clean this new one to return to the store and things got stuck in the trash and did not want to go even with the option down. So I download trash-it! From macupdate and it finally worked.
The trash bug is gone.! However, the bug stills in the previous driver and if I let this driver on overnight it sends a pid message to the computer freezing it.
This bug used to be in the computer and after backing up all the data I fresh re-installed the OS System. It went away from the computer and it got insulated at the driver. Now my task is to backup the previous driver without bringing the bug with it to the new driver. That is not going to be an easy task. I let you know when I finished it.
I have to look for some type of open source defragmentation software that will analyse and recover data clean. Yey Thanks for the tip on choosing for the driver. I really appreciate your input! П™‚ Eduardo Message was edited by: Eduardo B1.
Sorry for the confusion. You're right, it should be 'drive' the hardware instead of driver.
My apologies! Too many hours debugging stuff. Thanks for clearing that up! П™‚ Eduardo Ps: By the way, I ordered the Voyager Q Drive interface and the 1T Seagate Barracuda 7200.12.
Both had a very good price on it. I'll be swapping drives in the future.
I really liked the Seagate drive performance, very quiet and free of vibrations. Bay the other hand, I cannot say the same for the one am using to backup the powerbook. It is an iomega. I only turn it on at night time when I am away from my Office/Studio. The thing vibrates a loud base frequence that disturbs me at times.
